AYSO Region 358 - Laie Hawaii

Announcement

Region 358 — Fall 2025

Volunteer with AYSO Region 358

Every coach, referee, and monitor makes youth soccer possible for the kids of Kahuku, Lāʻie, Hauʻula, Punalūʻu & Kaʻaʻawa.

⚠ This Season Needs You. Region 358 cannot run a season without a full team of volunteers. We need coaches, referees, field monitors, and setup crews. If minimum volunteer numbers are not met, the season will be cancelled. Please read below and sign up today.
100% Volunteer-Run Soccer

AYSO is entirely volunteer-powered. There are no paid coaches or paid referees — every person on that field on game day is a parent, neighbor, or community member who raised their hand. When you volunteer, you are directly giving the children of our communities a safe, fun, and organized place to learn the game and grow as athletes and teammates.

How to Become an AYSO Volunteer

All AYSO volunteers must complete the following steps before taking the field. Steps 1–6 apply to everyone. Additional steps apply depending on your role.

1
Complete the AYSO Volunteer Application All Volunteers
Every volunteer must complete an AYSO Volunteer Application Form each year and submit an e-signed copy to the region. This is completed through Sports Connect and must be renewed annually.
2
Pass a Background Check — Sterling Volunteers All Volunteers
Every volunteer must complete and pass a criminal background check through Sterling Volunteers. After submitting your application, you will receive an email from Sterling Volunteers with instructions. All requested information must be provided. This check exists to ensure the safety of our children. **The region pays the fee for this.
3
Complete Safe Haven Training All Volunteers
Safe Haven is AYSO's child protection course covering safe and appropriate behavior with children, abuse prevention, and what to do if you see something concerning. Completed online at AYSOU (AYSO University). Takes approximately 90 minutes.
4
CDC HEADS UP Concussion Training On-Field Volunteers
All on-field volunteers — including coaches, referees, and monitors — must complete the CDC Concussion Awareness course. Completed online at AYSOU. Covers how to recognize, respond to, and prevent concussions in youth athletes.

8
Role-Specific Training Referees Coaches

What We Need & What to Expect
Coaches & Assistant Coaches
Most Urgent Need

Coaches are the backbone of every team. Without a certified coach, a division cannot play — U12, U14–U19 divisions are currently on waitlist status until coaches come forward.

What coaches do: Lead practices, teach fundamentals, build team culture, and support players through the season (August – November).

Certification: U10 and below do not require formal certification, though it is strongly encouraged. U12 and older require age-appropriate AYSO coaching certification (see the chart below). Some certifications are fully online; others include an in-person field session. Region 358 will help connect you with training resources.

Time commitment: Practices begin in August. Plan for roughly 1–2 practices per week plus games on Saturdays.

🚩
Referees
Needed Every Game Day

Referees ensure fair, safe, and fun games for all players. You do not need prior referee experience — we provide training right here in the region.

What referees do: Officiate matches, enforce the laws of the game, and maintain a positive environment on the field.

Certification: All referees must complete the online courses listed in Steps 4–7 above, plus attend a live in-person training session with one of our Referee Trainers - usually Jim Tueller. We hold referee training before every season for new officials. Contact us to register for the next session.

Time commitment: Game Saturdays throughout September – November.

👥
Field & Safety Monitors
Required Every Saturday

Games cannot happen without this. We require a minimum of 3 field/parking monitors and 2 safety monitors every single game Saturday. If this minimum is not met, games will not be held and the season may be cancelled.

3
Field & Parking Monitors
2
Safety Monitors
7:30 AM
Start time, every Saturday

Monitor duties include:

  • Inspecting field grounds before the first game and after the last game of the day
  • Assisting with field directions and answering spectator questions
  • Enforcing parking rules and maintaining safe flow of vehicles and pedestrians
  • Supporting basic first aid needs
  • Ensuring all equipment is properly set up before games and secured after

Time commitment: 7:30 AM through end of games, every game Saturday (September – November).

Requirements: Completion of the standard volunteer application, background check, Safe Haven, SafeSport, and CDC Concussion training (Steps 1–5 above).

Field Setup & Breakdown Crew

All goals and field equipment must be properly set up before games begin each Saturday and taken down and stored safely after the last game. This is a physical but vital role that keeps our equipment in good condition and our field safe.

Time commitment: Early morning setup before 7:30 AM and end-of-day breakdown after the final game, every game Saturday.

Requirements: Standard volunteer application and background check (Steps 1–2 above).
